Sunday was just another workday as far as Dwayne was concerned, as politics did not take a day off for rest, and neither did he. With a mug of strong coffee nearby, he routinely spent his Sunday mornings multitasking: walking his treadmill while reading the Houston Chronicle, the Dallas Morning News, and two or three other publications. Finished with that, he’d catch highlights of Meet the Press, Face the Nation, This Week with George Stephanopoulos, CNN and MSN by channel surfing on the three television sets he kept running in the kitchen, the bedroom and the den of his ranch-style house in Southwest Houston.

Now, Dwayne stepped out of the shower, quickly toweled off and began to dress, his mind turning to Trina and what had happened the night before. He had driven home in a fog of happiness, feeling hopeful about pursuing a relationship with her. However, he remained slightly off balance and unsure about how to proceed with this gorgeous, smart and sexy woman. After the way she’d made love to him, he was no longer worried that she might be playing with his emotions just to get him to sign a contract, convinced that her feelings were genuine. He could hardly wait to see her again.

She was a damn good media coach, too. He had been wrong to mock her critique yesterday. Yes, she could be blunt, but she knew how to deliver bad news in a constructive manner. Was she brash? Yes—but what was wrong with a strong, self-confident woman who knew what she was doing? She was definitely intelligent and too driven to ignore—an intriguing combination that made Dwayne grow hard with longing just thinking about her. He had sensed all along that there was a sensuous diva lurking beneath that hardboiled, all-about-business exterior, and he had been right. But could he have her as a lover while she helped him win the election?

Yes. If I play it right, I can have it both ways, he told himself, up for the challenge. But maybe I ought to be coaching Trina in what to expect on the campaign trail, he fretted, knowing how rough the contest could get, while looking forward to his next session with her.

Going into his sunny, L-shaped kitchen, he checked the fridge and frowned. The empty shelves did not surprise him, as he rarely cooked anything resembling a meal. Long hours at the office and his busy appearance schedule kept him away from home; either eating chicken dinners at political gatherings or grabbing a bite on the run. However, Ray was coming by today to work on the upcoming rally and Dwayne wished he’d remembered to stop by the store yesterday to pick up some chips and beer, at least.

Blowing air through his lips, Dwayne knew what had happened. He had been so distracted over meeting Trina he’d forgotten all about his meeting with Ray.

One eye on the clock, Dwayne picked up his handheld and speed-dialed Ray, who was probably already on his way.
